Common questions
What does BarePeek show?
For Word, Excel and PowerPoint files: the author and last editor, company, dates, comments, tracked changes, hidden text, hidden sheets, rows and slides, and presenter notes. For PDFs: author, dates and software, comments and markup, attachments, layers, scripts, form fields, earlier versions saved inside the file, and text hidden under black boxes. For photos: location, date, camera and serial number. Each finding comes with a plain explanation.
What does “Worth a look” mean?
BarePeek sorts what it finds into three groups. Worth a look is content left in the file that the sender may not have meant to share, such as comments, tracked changes, hidden sheets or a photo’s location. Who and when is routine: author, dates, program. Technical details are codes and settings that rarely matter, and stay folded until you open them.
Why does BarePeek say there is text under a black box?
A black box drawn over text in a PDF does not delete the words underneath. They can often still be copied out. BarePeek tells you it found covered text but never shows you what it says.
Does BarePeek change my file?
No. It only reads. It never edits, cleans or deletes your original. To remove hidden details from your own files, use Baredoc for documents or Bareshot for photos and videos.
What does BarePeek not check?
In Pages and Numbers files BarePeek reports the package details but does not read comments yet. It cannot see anything that is only visible on the page, and it does not read the words inside a photo or a scanned page.
How do I open the original file from the list?
On a Mac, double-click a file in the strip along the bottom and BarePeek opens the original in its usual app. On iPhone, double-tap to preview it. To take a file out of the list, select it and click the x, or use the right-click menu. This never deletes the file.
How do I use it from Files or Mail?
Open the file, tap the Share button, and choose BarePeek. If you do not see it, swipe the row of apps to the end, tap More, and turn BarePeek on. From the share sheet BarePeek checks files up to 24 MB. Open larger files in the app itself.
Why can’t BarePeek open my file?
Password protected files cannot be opened: remove the password in the app that made the file first. Files over 150 MB on iPhone, or 250 MB on Mac, are also left out. Only PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Keynote, Pages, Numbers and JPEG, HEIC and PNG photos are supported.
Does BarePeek upload my files?
No. Everything happens on your iPhone or Mac. See the privacy policy.
Something went wrong. How do I report it?
In the app, tap the info button, then Something wrong? Diagnostic report. You can see exactly what the report contains, then email it to us or save it as a file. It never contains file names or contents, and nothing is sent unless you send it.
